Parliament Speaker Annita Demetriou says shifting geopolitical conditions could open new prospects in the Cyprus issue, urging unity and strategic approach.

Parliament Speaker and DISY leader Annita Demetriou said new opportunities may be emerging in the Cyprus issue, following Monday’s National Council meeting.

She stressed that developments must be assessed alongside wider international and regional dynamics, noting that the United Nations, under Secretary General António Guterres, is making a substantial effort to convene a new expanded conference aimed at restarting negotiations.

Demetriou also pointed to Turkey’s relations with the European Union, arguing that Ankara’s ambitions could create leverage, provided it abandons its position on a two state solution and progress is made on the Cyprus issue.

She reiterated the importance of appointing a European Union special envoy for Cyprus, saying such a move could contribute meaningfully to efforts for progress.

“At this stage we need neither exaggeration nor complacency. We need unity, consensus and hard work from all,” she said, adding that the national interest must remain above party or other agendas.

She concluded by stressing the need for coordinated action at all levels, noting that “the more united we are internally, the stronger we are externally.”
