Cypriot MEPs called for more involvement of the EU in the efforts for peace and stability in the region.

AKEL MEP Giorgos Georgiou criticised the European Union for its stance towards the ongoing tragedy in Palestine during his intervention at the European Parliament session in Strasbourg, where the so-called “peace agreement” between Hamas and Israel that emerged after the intervention of US President Donald Trump and the European stance was discussed.

“The genocide continues, humanitarian aid never began,” stressed Georgiou, denouncing both Israel and the international community for the ongoing bloodshed in Gaza.

The AKEL MEP accused the European Union of passivity and hypocrisy, noting that for two years it has been watching “tragically absent, waiting for Trump to bring a controversial peace plan”.

Concluding his statement, Georgiou underlined that peace in Palestine requires political will, virtue and courage, noting that this means the creation of a Palestinian State. “Do you dare to impose it? History will judge you and it will judge you severely”, he said.

Mavrides: “The EU cannot be absent from the establishment of peace in the Middle East”

The need for a more active EU presence and role in international peace efforts in the Middle East was emphasised by DIKO’s MEP, Costas Mavrides, during his intervention at the debate.

Mavrides pointed out that the recent peace summit for the Middle East “brought hope for peace” but noted that it was held “without the EU’s participation”.

“If the EU wishes to be a global player, it cannot be absent from the establishment of peace and stability in a region that is in its immediate vicinity and is of strategic importance”, he underlined.

The Cypriot MEP also referred to the participation of the Republic of Cyprus at the Sharm el Sheikh Summit, highlighting the proposal submitted by Nicosia towards security, humanitarian aid and reconstruction in the Middle East.

“Cyprus’ proposal was warmly welcomed by the MED9 yesterday, and I strongly believe that it deserves to be given more attention and support by the European Commission,” Mavrides said, adding that strengthening Europe’s geopolitical role is more necessary today than ever.

On September 11, 2025, the European Parliament adopted a resolution stating that the establishment of a Palestinian state was key to peace, is of crucial importance for peace, Israel’s security, and regional normalisation.
