The number of civil servants in Cyprus reached 55,367 in March 2026, an increase of 42 people, or 0.1 percent, compared with the same month in 2025.
According to the Statistical Service, employment fell by 0.8 percent in the public service and by 0.7 percent in the security forces, while staffing in the education service increased by 1.8 percent.
Across the civil service as a whole, the largest increase compared with March 2025 was recorded among employees of indefinite duration, up by 1.7 percent. The biggest decrease, at 2.0 percent, was seen among employees of fixed duration.
Looking at staffing by service and employment category, the highest percentage increase was recorded among employees of indefinite duration in the education service, at 24.9 percent. The steepest percentage decline occurred among fixed-term employees in the security forces, down by 85.9 percent.
The Statistical Service noted that this sharp reduction in fixed-term staff in the security forces largely reflects the completion and non-renewal of specific fixed-term contracts in July 2025.
For the period from January to March 2026, the average number of civil servants rose by 0.2 percent compared with the corresponding period in 2025, the Statistical Service said.
