According to official data submitted to Parliament by the Minister of Labour, Marinos Mousiouttas, a total of 2,851 women who were victims of domestic violence were accommodated in shelters run by the Association for the Prevention and Handling of Violence in the Family (SPAVO) during the period 2022-2024. A further 259 women were accommodated between January 2025 and April 2025.
The accommodation facilities serve as safe shelters for temporary residence for women and their children who are at immediate physical and psychological risk from individuals within their family environment. At the same time, counselling support, guidance and referrals to relevant state and social services are provided, strengthening the overall protection and rehabilitation of victims.
Responding to a related question from Giorgos Koukoumas, the Minister of Labour stated that the necessary steps have already been set in motion to establish an accommodation facility in the Larnaca district. The project is expected to be completed within the first four months of 2026.
It is also noted that SPAVO, with the support of the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare, is implementing the project “Preventing Domestic Violence and Protecting Victims”. The project falls under the framework of the Second Swiss Contribution (Programming Period 2019-2029) and aims to reduce economic and social inequalities, as well as strengthen measures in the field of migration. Among its key actions is the upgrade and expansion of accommodation facilities for victims of domestic violence.
