The Audit Office has confirmed it is examining complaints concerning the Paphos Municipality, but the matter remains at an early stage.

Audit Office spokeswoman Yiota Michael told CNA that the information received is under review and evaluation. She said the findings will be submitted to the Auditor General, who will decide on the next steps.

“The possibility of launching an audit is being considered, with the Audit Office further investigating the cases,” she added.

Ms Michael said it is not yet possible to set a timeline for the start of the investigation, or to define its scope or duration. She stressed that the Audit Office always bases its statements on verified facts, so care is needed to avoid exposing individuals or situations.

When asked about the nature of the complaints, she confirmed they are financial, but could not provide further details. She said instructions from the Auditor General currently prevent more information from being released.

She added that any public update will be provided later if deemed necessary, emphasising that no conclusions can be drawn before the investigation begins.

Asked when the audit might start, Ms Michael said she cannot provide a specific date. She noted that, given the public interest surrounding Paphos Municipality, the investigation will start as soon as possible. The information is still being studied, a process that requires careful planning and assessment.

Meanwhile, Paphos Deputy Mayor and acting Mayor, Angelos Onisiforou said that the municipality has sent a letter to the Audit Office requesting an audit. He said the request followed his assumption of mayoral duties.

“After taking over the mayoralty following ten years under Mr Phedon Phedonos, I consider it essential to know precisely the situation I am inheriting,” he said.
