EU Local Councillors Network Meets in Nicosia

Larnaca Mayor highlighted the importance of the initiative and its benefits in informing citizens about EU actions

The EU Local Councillors Network held a meeting at Nicosia City Hall. The event was part of the European Committee of the Regions’ off-site Presidency in Cyprus, linked to Cyprus’ EU Council Presidency. Larnaca Municipality also took part.

According to the municipality, the meeting aimed to bring local elected representatives together. Discussions focused on how the Network can strengthen connections between the EU and local communities in Brussels.

During the event, members of the Committee’s Presidency congratulated Larnaca Municipality for the interest shown by its councillors.

Larnaca Mayor and President of the Union of Cyprus Municipalities, Andreas Vyras, highlighted the importance of the initiative and its benefits in informing citizens about EU actions.

Andri Andreou, Chair of the Committee on International Relations and European Programmes, spoke about the experience of participating. She noted the benefits of further training for councillors and the positive impact on citizens. She also thanked the EU Commission delegation for the opportunity to support EU work locally.

Vasilis Danilov, correspondent for the EUROPE DIRECT Information Centres and EU Local Councillors, presented the Network’s work and Larnaca’s example. Myrto Katsouri, Head of EUROPE DIRECT Larnaca-Famagusta, proposed organising a specialised training day for councillors on EU programmes and actions.
