The Interior Ministry has approved an additional €11 million in housing subsidies to support 277 more young individuals and couples, following a surge in applications.
Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou said the decision was taken after total applications reached 1,018, significantly exceeding the scheme’s initial scope.
The programme originally provided grants of up to €50,000 to 400 beneficiaries, based on income criteria and household composition. Those applications have already been approved, with total funding of €14.5 million allocated.
The additional funding will now allow all applications that were positively evaluated to be covered.
“Taking into account the strong response from young people, the government has decided to extend the scheme so that all eligible applicants receive support,” Ioannou said.
He added that the move reflects the government’s commitment to helping young people and couples secure housing.
“We continue to implement targeted housing policies that respond to real needs, ensuring that available resources return to society,” he said.
Housing policy priorities
The scheme forms part of a broader housing strategy built on two pillars: increasing housing supply, particularly affordable homes in urban and suburban areas, and strengthening purchasing power, with a focus on young people, families and vulnerable groups.
Housing is also a priority at European Union level and is included in the bloc’s affordable housing agenda.
The issue is expected to be discussed at an informal ministerial meeting in Nicosia on May 12, during Cyprus’ Presidency of the Council of the European Union.
