Two New Foot-and-Mouth Cases Detected in Athienou

Veterinary Services have not yet decided on the fate of rare-breed animals, with a decision expected in the coming days.

Two new cases of foot-and-mouth disease have been detected in sheep and goat farms in Athienou, according to an update provided to the Cyprus News Agency on Saturday by the Veterinary Services. The total number of infected units has now risen to 110.

Regarding rare-breed animals, including red cattle and fat-tailed sheep, sources said that the Veterinary Services have not yet taken a decision on how they will be handled. A decision is expected in the coming days.

As announced on Thursday, the second phase of vaccination for cattle has reached 81%, while coverage among sheep and goats stands at 64% of the total livestock population.

As for pig farms, all units within restriction zones have received at least a first dose of the vaccine. In addition, four units within restriction zones in Larnaca district have already received a second dose.
