The Ministry of the Interior gave the green light on Wednesday to MEP Fidias Panayiotou for the establishment and registration of a political party under the name Direct Democracy Cyprus.
The original name submitted with the application, Direct Democracy, was not accepted by the Ministry as it referred to a form of governance rather than a political party. The issue was resolved with the addition of the word Cyprus to the party’s name.
At the same time, amendments were made to the party’s statute governing its operation, which were also approved. Fidias Panayiotou himself was declared interim President of the party.
Following this development, the way is now open for Panayiotou to begin the process of drawing up the party’s electoral list, with the announcement of candidates ahead of the forthcoming parliamentary elections in May.
