Bicommunal crews started restoration works at the church of Agios Georgios, in the Mezere area of Turkish-occupied Karavas, while works under the same contract will also extend to the church of Agia Irene.

According to a recent post by the Co-Chair of the bicommunal Technical Committee, Sotos Ktoris, the project is funded by the community and the European Union and is being implemented with UNDP technical guidance.

“Care for our cultural heritage can and must function as a bridge of understanding and reconciliation,” he says.

At the same time, Ktoris notes that restoration works continue at the church of Panagia Faneromeni in Gastria, in the Karpas peninsula.

Moreover, in another post, Ktoris notes that rescue works at the church of Panagia Melissa, which is built on the northern slope of the Pentadaktylos mountain range, was recently completed. These works prevented the loss of the monument, he adds.

He says that Greek Cypriot and Turkish Cypriot conservators, architects, engineers and builders worked “harmoniously with enthusiasm and dedication” to save the church.

This project as well was implemented with the financial assistance of the European Union and the technical support of the UNDP.
