The President of Cyprus will attend Monday’s meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman with the necessary political will and a constructive approach, aiming to restart direct negotiations within the agreed framework, deputy government spokesman Yiannis Antoniou said on Sunday.
Speaking at a memorial service in Nicosia, Antoniou underlined the Greek Cypriot side is approaching the talks with a view to achieving tangible progress.
“If the other side adopts the same approach, then there are reasonable expectations for the next step,” he noted.
Antoniou also highlighted the role of the United Nations, saying the commitment of Secretary-General António Guterres—as expressed during his recent meeting with the Cypriot president—encourages efforts to intensify negotiations and make full use of all available diplomatic avenues.
“The aim is to bring an end to the unacceptable status quo,” he added.
