MEP Dimitris Papadakis says the government’s decision to involve the FBI in the Santi case suggests a lack of confidence in Cyprus authorities.

Cypriot MEP Dimitris Papadakis criticised the government’s decision to invite a Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) team to Cyprus to assist with the investigation into the Santy case, suggesting the move reflects a lack of trust in local institutions.

In a post on X, Papadakis said the government is effectively admitting that Cyprus lacks functioning state authorities, or that it fears criticism over the handling of the investigation.

“Now we will bring in the FBI. The government admits that we do not have a state or authorities, or that it fears any criticism,” he wrote.

Papadakis also made a sarcastic reference to journalist Makarios Drousiotis, whose claims reportedly implicate him in the case.

“Go ahead and bring aliens as well, perhaps then Makarios will congratulate you,” he added.

Papadakis noted that he had already handed over his devices for a private forensic examination, which he said returned clean results.

The comments come amid ongoing controversy surrounding the Santi investigation, which has triggered political reactions and public debate in Cyprus.
