Pope Leo is expected to be discharged from the Agostino Gemelli Hospital on Saturday afternoon after doctors determined that his health has improved sufficiently for him to return to the Vatican.

According to an official update, the pontiff's medical team concluded that his steady recovery now allows him to continue his convalescence at home.

Return to the Vatican

The pope will return to the Vatican later on Saturday following his stay at the Catholic hospital in Rome.

Doctors said the decision was based on the continued improvement in his health.

Sunday blessing expected

The pontiff is also expected to resume a key weekly tradition on Sunday by delivering his blessing to the faithful gathered in St Peter's Square.

The appearance would mark his first public engagement since his hospitalisation.
