US President Donald Trump said he would “love” to see the Republic of Ireland united with British-administered Northern Ireland, adding that he believed reunification could eventually happen.
His comments came after a meeting with Irish Prime Minister Micheál Martin in Dublin.
“Well, I don’t want to cause any problems, but I will tell you that I would love to see it united,” Trump told reporters.
“The way I look at it, it will happen eventually. I think it would be a fantastic development,” he said.
“Now, the United Kingdom will have something to say about that, but I think it would be a great thing.”
London says its position remains unchanged
The office of British Prime Minister Andy Burnham said the UK government’s position on Irish reunification remained unchanged following Trump’s remarks.
Responding to questions from MPs on Wednesday about the prospect of a border poll in Northern Ireland, Burnham said: “I am not aware that there is majority public support for another referendum, and until that changes, there will not be another one.”
A Downing Street spokesperson said on Saturday that the prime minister’s comments still stood after Trump said he believed Irish reunification would eventually take place.
