US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said on Tuesday that a deal between the United States and Iran to reopen the Strait of Hormuz could be reached as soon as Wednesday.
"We are in talks with the Iranians and I think there is a chance we may have a deal today or tomorrow to open the Strait and move towards a more normalised position in this conflict," Bessent said in an interview with the American network CNBC.
Separately, a senior Iranian source told Reuters on Tuesday that Iran wants control over vessels entering the Strait of Hormuz and visibility over outbound traffic, with the ability to intervene if necessary, under a provisional plan being discussed with Oman for reopening the strategic waterway.
The source, who is involved in the talks, described this as the general outline currently under discussion, and said the outbound route being proposed would run between Iran and Oman, with exit clearance granted through Oman after Iran is notified.
"Tehran is unlikely to shift its position," the source added, saying that Iran has already shown flexibility by moving away from its original demand for full control over traffic in both directions through the strait.
