Two firefighters were found dead inside their vehicle during efforts to contain a wildfire in Krya Vrysi, Rethymno. Initial information indicated that they were volunteers, with asphyxiation considered the likely cause of death.
According to Cretalive, the two firefighters became trapped inside the vehicle as the blaze spread through the area.
Large firefighting operation under way
More than 125 firefighters are involved in the operation, including six ground teams from the 3rd and 19th Special Forest Operations Units, known as EMODE.
A total of 27 fire engines have been deployed, while four helicopters and four firefighting aircraft have also been mobilised and are operating periodically.
Water tankers and a public works vehicle from the Municipality of Agios Vasileios are also assisting the firefighting operation.
