The intention of United Nations Secretary-General António Guterres to convene another expanded meeting keeps alive the prospect of restarting substantive negotiations on the Cyprus issue, DISY President Annita Demetriou said on Wednesday.
Although the latest discussions produced no significant progress and no date was set for a new 5+1 meeting, Demetriou said the continuation of the process remained important.
A basis for the next steps
In a written statement, the DISY president said the preservation of the convergences already achieved provides an important foundation for the next stages of the process.
She stressed that the current circumstances require seriousness, responsibility and a firm commitment to the objective of achieving the progress expected by the UN Secretary-General.
DISY pledges constructive support
Demetriou said DISY would continue to contribute consistently and constructively to every meaningful effort aimed at maintaining the prospect of renewed negotiations.
She added that any renewed process must remain within the agreed United Nations framework and be guided by the principles and values of the European Union.
