Iran says a US blockade on its ports has already been lifted, days before Tehran and Washington are expected to formalise a memorandum aimed at ending months of conflict.
Iranian Deputy Foreign Minister Majid Takht-Ravanchi said on Tuesday that the restrictions on Iranian ports had been removed before the official signing of the memorandum of understanding between the two sides.
“The blockade was lifted before the formal signing,” Takht-Ravanchi was quoted as saying by the Iranian government website, adding that this had been one of Tehran’s preconditions for agreeing to the deal.
Iran and the United States announced on Monday that they had reached an agreement intended to end the war that began after the US-Israeli attack of February 28.
The memorandum is expected to be formally signed on Friday in Switzerland, although some details surrounding the ceremony and its format have not yet been fully clarified.
The lifting of restrictions on Iranian ports is seen by Tehran as an early sign that the agreement is already being implemented, even before the formal diplomatic process is completed.
