The attack highlights Ukraine’s growing ability to strike deep inside Russian territory.
St Petersburg Governor Alexander Beglov advised residents to stay indoors and warned of possible disruptions to mobile networks. The regional governor of Leningrad, Alexander Drozdenko, said 141 drones were shot down over the surrounding area.
It is time to end this war. But Russia’s ruler wants to keep fighting. That is why Ukrainian sanctions against this aggression are working. Russia’s Defence Ministry said its air defences intercepted a total of 376 Ukrainian drones.
Zelensky: ‘Our drones travelled 1,000 kilometres’
“ Last night, our drones covered a distance of about 1,000 kilometers to the St. Petersburg region – to the enemy navy’s arsenals and a base in Kronstadt,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky wrote on X.
The strike marks the latest blow to efforts by President Putin to present the conflict as distant from everyday life in Russia.

A similar raid took place on Wednesday, shortly before the start of the economic forum often described as Russia’s equivalent of ‘Davos.’
On Thursday, Mr Putin rejected Mr Zelensky’s proposal for a face-to-face meeting, saying he saw “no point” in such talks. Mr Zelensky’s letter, the first public message he has addressed directly to Mr Putin since the 2022 invasion, was strongly critical of the Russian leader’s 26-year rule.
Videos circulating on social media are said to show scenes from the latest attack.
