Volt Cyprus has voiced support for residents of Sia opposing the possible expansion of a quarry that has operated in the area for the past 47 years.
In a statement following Sunday's protest, the party said it shares the concerns of local residents, who it said have lived for decades with the effects of quarrying activity, including dust, noise, blasting, vibrations and increased pressure on the road network.
Calls for environmental transparency
Volt argued that the issue extends beyond the local community, saying the protection of the natural environment, water resources and landscape is a matter of wider public interest.
The party called on the government to publish all environmental studies and monitoring data related to the quarry and to confirm that the cumulative impact of its long-term operation has been fully assessed before any decision is taken on a possible expansion.
Questions over permits and compliance
The party also raised concerns about allegations by the community that previous agreements regarding quarrying boundaries may have been breached.
According to Volt, the relevant authorities should provide clear answers regarding:
- Existing operating permits.
- Compliance with licensing conditions.
- Future plans for the quarry.
Demand for quarry phase-out plan
Volt further endorsed the community's call for a binding timetable for the gradual cessation of quarrying activities and the restoration of the natural landscape.
In its concluding remarks, the party said it would continue to support citizens' efforts to defend environmental protection and quality of life.
"Economic development cannot take place without clear limits, transparency and respect for local communities," the statement said.
