President Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhurman met on Thursday at the residence of the UN Secretary-General’s Special Representative in Cyprus, Khassim Diagne, in Nicosia.

According to a UN statement, the meeting took place in a positive atmosphere and included what was described as a productive discussion on substantive issues and the way forward.

The two leaders reiterated their appreciation for the UN Secretary-General’s continued commitment to the Cyprus issue and agreed on a series of measures.

Agreed measures

These included a framework for the establishment of a consultative body aimed at engaging civil society, as well as efforts to prepare a plan for the holding of religious services across the island for an initial six-month period, subject to renewal.

The leaders also agreed to continue working towards a coordinated response to tackle foot-and-mouth disease and to establish a sub-committee under the Technical Committee on Economic and Commercial Matters to discuss issues related to products already designated as Protected Geographical Origin (PGO) and Protected Geographical Indication (PGI).

The two sides agreed to meet again in the near future.
