Eyes on an expanded conference, Christodoulides underlines.

A meeting between President of the Republic, Nikos Christodoulides and Turkish Cypriot leader, Tufan Erhurman, is currently underway. The meeting that began shortly after 4pm (local time) is being hosted at the residence of the Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Cyprus, Khassim Diagne in the buffer zone of Nicosia airport.

Christodoulides arrived at the venue, followed by Erhurman a few minutes later.

Departing from the Presidential Palace to the venue of the meeting, Christodoloudies told reporters that the Personal Envoy of the UNSG Maria Angela Holguin "has always been a protagonist in this effort on behalf of the UN Secretary General."

He added that Holguin recently had a meeting with the UN Secretary-General on the Cyprus issue, noting that this effort is being strengthened even more following the UNSG's meeting with the Turkish President in Ankara, followed by a meeting President Christodoulides had with the UNSG in March, in Brussels.

Specifics on the agenda

Asked how the effort will be strengthened, Christodoulides said that meetings are starting with a very specific substantive agenda, with the aim of concluding with the convening of an expanded conference that will announce the resumption of talks.”

He was also asked whether he would  address the issue of the church mass of Apostle Andreas and the issue of the Armenians. “Not only that. It is the issue of Apostolos Andreas, it is the issue of the Armenian community, there are also some other issues that I will of course touch upon, some issues for which I see a tendency on the part of some to create an atmosphere that will create obstacles to the great effort in terms of substance" he pointed out.

"In this effort, I expect the leader of the Turkish Cypriot community to address these problems, these challenges wherever they come from, so as to show both his readiness and the fact that we are moving in the same direction. I have some other issues beyond these, which I will discuss."
