Two Cyta unions say they have no objection to the appointment of Loizos Economides to the telecommunications authority's board, provided there is no incompatibility or conflict of interest under the law.

The Pancyprian Independent Trade Union of Cyta Employees (PASE-ATHK) and the Cyta Scientific Staff Union (SEP-ATHK) have said they have no objection to the appointment of Loizos Economides to the board of the Cyprus Telecommunications Authority (Cyta), provided no legal incompatibility exists.

In a joint statement, the two unions said that, "if there is no incompatibility under the legislation", they have no objection to Economides serving on the organisation's board of directors.

The statement comes amid reactions to Economides' appointment and an ongoing public debate over whether the appointment could raise issues of incompatibility or conflict of interest.

The unions stressed that statutory provisions must be respected to ensure that any potential conflicts of interest are avoided and that the organisation continues to operate in accordance with good governance principles.

Economides was recently appointed to Cyta's board of directors.

The appointment has drawn criticism from some quarters, including because of his wife's employment relationship with the organisation, prompting questions over whether a conflict of interest could arise.

PASE-ATHK and SEP-ATHK, however, made clear that their position is straightforward: if the appointment complies with the applicable legal framework and no incompatibility exists, they see no reason to object.
