President Nikos Christodoulides and Greek Ambassador Konstantinos Kollias attended the commemorations, which included a church service and student parade.

The national anniversary of October 28, 1940, was marked in Nicosia with a formal church service and the traditional student parade along Lord Byron Avenue, in a series of events attended by political, religious and military officials.

The parade took place in front of the Greek Embassy, with participants including the Corfu Philharmonic Orchestra and two Greek associations, Kavala and Panagia Soumela.

The parade was reviewed by President Nikos Christodoulides and Greek Ambassador to Cyprus Konstantinos Kollias.

Representatives of veterans' groups, students from higher education institutions, secondary school pupils, scouts, associations and other organisations also took part.

Commemorations begin at St Barnabas Cathedral

The day's events began at 10am with a celebratory church service at the Cathedral of St Barnabas, presided over by Archbishop of Cyprus Georgios.

Those attending included President Christodoulides, House President Annita Demetriou, Education, Sport and Youth Minister Athena Michaelidou, Greek Ambassador Kollias and other members of the country's political, state and military leadership.

Agriculture Minister Christos Senekis delivered the commemorative address.

A National Guard honour guard and the force's band also paid tribute outside the cathedral.

The annual commemorations mark October 28, widely known as Ohi Day, which recalls Greece's rejection of an ultimatum issued by Fascist Italy in 1940 and the country's entry into the Second World War.
