Cyprus’s Greek community is marking the anniversary of 28 October 1940 today with church services and parades, commemorating the Greeks’ “No” to foreign occupiers, fascism and, later, Nazism.
A celebratory church service will be held at 10.00 a.m. at the Cathedral of St Barnabas in Nicosia, officiated by Archbishop of Cyprus Georgios. Those attending will include President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides, Minister of Education, Sport and Youth Athina Michaelidou, President of the House of Representatives Annita Demetriou, Greek Ambassador Konstantinos Kollias, and members of the political and military leadership.
The commemorative address will be delivered by Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment Christos Senekkis.
At 11.00 a.m., the President of the Republic and the Greek Ambassador will take the salute at the parade in front of the Greek Embassy. The parade will include contingents representing veteran fighters, students of higher and tertiary education institutions, secondary school students, Scouts, associations and organisations.
Similar events will be held in towns and communities in the government-controlled areas of Cyprus. In Limassol, the Government will be represented by Transport Minister Evy Tsolaki; in Paphos, by Government Spokesperson Konstantinos Letymbiotis; in Larnaca, by Deputy Minister to the President Irene Piki; and in the Municipality of Paralimni, by Deputy Minister of Tourism Kostas Koumis.
