The interior ministry said that those exempt from service in the Force include members of the Council of Ministers and the House of Representatives, judges, members of the Public Service Commission and the Educational Service Commission, Director Generals at the Council of Ministers, the Director General of the House of Representatives, directors or heads of government departments or other state services, directors of public-law organisations, and members of the Central Council and District Councils of Civil Defence.

Clergy and people serving on a permanent basis in the Civil Defence Force, the Cyprus Army, the National Guard, the Police, the Fire Service or prisons are also exempt. The exemptions also cover those serving their term in the National Guard, those who have completed their service and belong to National Guard classes that have not been released from the reserve, and those who, because of special qualifications, are assigned to the reserve or other National Guard units. The latter category does not include people specifically referred to in the National Guard legislation or those granted an exemption or suspension from the obligation to serve in the National Guard under that legislation.

Also exempt are people serving in a service declared an “Essential Service” under Article 6 of the Law, who have been designated to implement that service’s civil defence plan and assigned responsibilities and obligations under the Regulations to address the effects of hostile actions.

The Ministry clarifies that people in the above categories must still report for registration and bring the necessary supporting documents. Exemption from service in the Force will subsequently be granted to those who meet the criteria.
