A 16-year-old student has died after losing control of the racing motorcycle he was riding in Argaka, Paphos district, and striking an Electricity Authority of Cyprus pole.
New evidence gathered by Paphos Traffic Police indicates that Giorgos Hadjioannou, from Agia Marina, initially struck the pavement before being thrown from the motorcycle and hitting the pole.
The exact circumstances that caused him to lose control remain under investigation.
Crash outside Argaka primary school
The fatal collision occurred at around 3.30pm on Sunday on Archbishop Makarios III Avenue, outside Argaka Primary School.
The teenager, a second-year student at Polis Chrysochous Lyceum, was travelling west on a racing motorcycle.
Police said the motorcycle was not registered.
Following the collision with the pole, the teenager landed on the road and sustained serious injuries.
Pronounced dead at hospital
An ambulance transported Hadjioannou to Polis Chrysochous Hospital, where doctors attempted to save him but subsequently pronounced him dead.
Police located protective clothing worn by the teenager at the scene, as well as a helmet.
Investigators have not yet established whether Hadjioannou was wearing the helmet at the time of the collision or was holding it in his hand.
Police investigate circumstances
According to information cited in the report, the teenager is believed to have been returning from a racing motorcycle track north of Argaka when the crash occurred.
Paphos Traffic Police are continuing investigations and examining all available evidence to establish the precise circumstances in which the teenager lost control of the motorcycle.
Hadjioannou's death has caused grief among his family, friends, classmates and the wider local community.
The crash is the third fatal road collision recorded in Paphos district this year and the first involving a motorcycle.
