The Cyprus Animal Party has expressed strong political and environmental opposition to an initiative registered with the Parliamentary Environment Committee to examine the “impact of the activities of specific activist organisations” operating in the environmental sector.
In a statement, the party said it strongly disagreed with the initiative and announced a peaceful protest outside the House of Representatives on Wednesday, 16 September, at 10am, during the Environment Committee’s meeting.
The Cyprus Animal Party has called on citizens, organisations, volunteers, activists and anyone who supports the protection of nature and animals to take part in the demonstration.
Party defends right to protest and activism
The party said the protest would not be intended to disrupt the committee proceedings or target individuals.
“We are not going to shout over anyone. We are going to be heard,” it said.
“We are not going to target people. We are going to defend a way of thinking: protecting the environment and animals is not a crime. Protest is not a crime. Activism is not a crime. Civil society is not the enemy.”
The party concluded by stressing that the protection of nature and animals was a responsibility shared by everyone.
