Three suspects arrested in Larnaca and Famagusta on Friday as part of an investigation into alleged conspiracy to commit murder and participation in a criminal organisation have been remanded in custody for eight days.
The three men appeared before Famagusta District Court on Saturday, which issued detention orders as investigations continue into the case.
Police Headquarters spokesperson Vyronas Vyronos said Cypriot authorities had received intelligence from Danish authorities through Europol regarding an alleged criminal act being planned against specific individuals in Cyprus.
According to Vyronos, the information prompted coordinated police action, including surveillance operations and the collection, analysis and assessment of intelligence and evidence.
"From the investigations that followed, evidence was secured on the basis of which court arrest warrants were obtained against three individuals," Vyronos said.
The suspects were arrested during a coordinated police operation carried out on Friday in the districts of Larnaca and Famagusta.
Vyronos said the case demonstrates "in practice the importance of the immediate exchange of information, operational cooperation and coordinated action between European law enforcement authorities".
He added that serious and organised crime continues to evolve, making use of new technologies, digital communication tools and cross-border networks.
Its effective combat, he said, requires modern capabilities, including timely intelligence, data analysis, specialised operational action and meaningful cross-border cooperation.
In that context, the Cyprus Police continues to strengthen its response to serious and organised crime by deepening cooperation with Europol and other European law enforcement agencies and investing in modern intelligence-gathering and operational policing methods.
The investigation is being conducted by a special investigative team from Police Headquarters in cooperation with the relevant European authorities.
