A family of three will be accommodated in a hotel for three days after a lightning strike sparked a fire at their property in Avgorou during Saturday's severe weather, local authorities said.
The fire broke out in a storage building attached to the residence as extreme weather conditions swept across the area.
Avgorou Deputy Mayor Panayiotis Michailas told CNA that Fire Service crews responded to the scene and were working to extinguish the blaze.
"The storage building and the house were affected by the fire because the explosion shattered the windows of the house, allowing smoke to enter the property," he said.
Michailas said Ayia Napa Mayor Christos Zannetou also visited the scene.
"A social worker and Civil Defence also attended the scene. Responsibility for accommodating the family of three has been undertaken by Ayia Napa Municipality," he said.
According to Michailas, officials from the Electromechanical Services Department are also expected to inspect the site as part of an investigation into the cause of the fire.
"The evidence indicates that the fire broke out as a result of a lightning strike," he said.
The incident occurred as severe thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds affected several parts of Cyprus under an orange weather warning.
