Thick smoke continues to rise from the fenced landfill site in Agia Varvara, Paphos, one day after a fire broke out in the area. The Fire Service has confirmed that no new fire has been reported.
The smoke is coming from the site of Sunday’s blaze, which was brought under control following the rapid deployment of firefighting crews.
Crews remain at the site
Fire engines remain in the area, with crews carrying out patrols and monitoring the site. An excavator is also covering the affected area with soil to extinguish any remaining hotspots that may still be burning beneath the surface.
The fire broke out at 13:59 on Sunday, 9 August, inside the fenced landfill site.
According to the Fire Service, the blaze burned inert materials, while crews worked to prevent it from spreading beyond the perimeter. Water drops continued after the fire was brought under control to extinguish smaller hotspots.
Risk of reignition
Fires at waste disposal sites can continue to smoulder beneath the surface for several days, even after visible flames have been extinguished.
The area will therefore remain under close observation until authorities are satisfied that there is no risk of reignition. The cause of the fire is expected to be investigated.
