The Odyssey Sets New IMAX Record

Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey has become the highest-grossing IMAX release of all time and the biggest box-office hit of the director's career.

The Odyssey achieved two major milestones at the global box office over the weekend.

The film adaptation of Homer's epic, starring Matt Damon as Odysseus, became the highest-grossing film of Christopher Nolan's career, surpassing $1.1 billion worldwide and overtaking The Dark Knight Rises (2012), which earned $1.08 billion.

At the same time, it became the highest-grossing IMAX release in history, generating $289 million in IMAX revenue and breaking the previous record held by Avatar (2009) with $271 million.

The film is currently:

  • The second highest-grossing film of 2026, behind Spider-Man: Brand New Day ($1.67 billion).
  • The second highest-grossing R-rated film ever released, behind Deadpool & Wolverine (2024), which grossed $1.3 billion.
