An investigation has begun into the circumstances surrounding the wildfire that broke out on Monday at the Kalo Chorio firing range and spread into nearby areas, the Ministry of Defence has confirmed.
Speaking to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA), Defence Ministry spokesperson Major Sofianos Philippides said the inquiry was launched following instructions from the defence minister and is already under way.
"As we speak today, the investigation is in progress," Philippides said.
He added that the findings are expected to be completed within approximately 10 days.
Focus on possible shortcomings
Philippides said the investigation will establish the precise circumstances that led to the blaze and determine whether any deficiencies or weaknesses were involved.
"Once the investigation is completed, it will become clear whether there were any shortcomings or weaknesses so that the situation can be improved," he said.
He added that the National Guard applies safety measures tailored to the nature of each activity it undertakes.
Minister ordered immediate inquiry
Philippides noted that the fire broke out following activity carried out by National Guard units at the Kalo Chorio range.
He recalled that the Minister of Defence addressed the incident shortly after it occurred and immediately ordered an investigation to determine exactly how the fire started and developed.
The inquiry is expected to examine the events leading up to the wildfire as authorities seek to establish whether procedures were followed and whether any lessons need to be learned.
