The Aradippou Municipal Council has unanimously voiced its opposition to a proposed residential facility for unaccompanied migrant minors in the town centre, arguing that the decision was advanced without adequate consultation, information or justification.
In a statement, the municipality said the council held an extraordinary meeting on Monday to discuss plans for a facility to be housed in an existing residence located in the heart of Aradippou, adjacent to a primary school as well as public and private kindergartens.
The council stressed that its position is not directed against the minors themselves and does not challenge the state's obligation to ensure their protection and welfare. "Our disagreement relates exclusively to the manner in which this decision is being promoted," the municipality said.
According to the statement, there was no formal consultation or cooperation with local authorities before the proposal was advanced, and the municipality was neither informed nor invited to express its views prior to the decision-making process.
The council also argued that no public consultation had taken place with residents directly affected by the proposal, despite what it described as strong local reactions.
In addition, it said no study had been presented demonstrating the suitability of the specific location.
The municipality further stated that serious questions remain regarding whether all required procedures have been followed and whether the necessary approvals have been obtained for the intended change of use of the property.
The council said decisions with significant social and local implications should not be taken without transparency, proper documentation, respect for institutional procedures and meaningful dialogue with both local government and the wider community.
For these reasons, the Municipal Council decided unanimously to oppose the proposed facility in Aradippou.
