The 2026-2027 school year began this morning across Cyprus, with the first bell ringing at 07:45 for pupils in primary education. A total of 52,186 children are enrolled in primary schools this year, including 8,919 new first-graders, while a further 14,398 pupils will attend kindergarten.
Pupil numbers for the new year
The Ministry of Education confirmed that primary education will welcome 52,186 pupils in total this year. Of these, 8,919 are beginning Year One, while 14,398 children are enrolled in pre-primary kindergartens across the country.
Schools and teaching staff
According to figures for the 2026-2027 school year, 328 primary schools and 274 kindergartens will operate across Cyprus. The number of teachers stands at 5,232 in primary schools and 1,135 in kindergartens. Teaching staff returned to schools on Monday, 7 September, ahead of the pupils' return.
Presidential visit marks the new term
President Nikos Christodoulides and Education Minister Athina Michaelidou visited Konstantinoupoleos Primary School in Nicosia on Monday morning to mark the start of the new school year. The pair also visited Agios Dometios Gymnasium and the School for the Deaf as part of the same visit.
