New research suggests that long-term meditation practice may be associated with a biologically younger brain. The study found that experienced meditators displayed patterns of brain activity during sleep that corresponded to a brain age nearly six years younger than their chronological age.
The findings add to existing evidence linking meditation with psychological wellbeing, concentration and emotional resilience, while highlighting a potential connection to long-term brain health.
How sleep reflects brain ageing
As people age, sleep patterns typically change. Sleep often becomes lighter, more fragmented and contains less time in its deepest restorative stages.
Researchers also observe reductions in slow brain waves, which are linked to recovery during sleep, and fewer sleep spindles, brief bursts of brain activity associated with memory consolidation. These markers are used to estimate the biological age of the brain.
According to the study, a biological brain age that exceeds chronological age is associated with a greater risk of cognitive decline, while a younger biological age is generally linked to better overall brain health.
What the study found
The research involved individuals who had practised advanced meditation techniques for many years.
Scientists monitored participants' brain activity during sleep using specialised devices in their homes. The results showed that the meditators' brains functioned as though they were, on average, 5.9 years younger than their actual age.
By comparison, individuals who did not engage in similar meditation practices had brain ages that were closer to their chronological ages. Larger differences were observed among people with cognitive impairments.
Sleep quality findings
One of the study's notable observations was that experienced meditators tended to sleep for fewer hours, but reported better-quality sleep.
The findings suggest that the restorative quality of sleep may be as important as its duration. Researchers found evidence of more organised and active sleep phases, which are associated with memory processes and overall brain function.
Cognitive and emotional outcomes
Beyond sleep-related measurements, meditators appeared to perform better in several cognitive tests.
The study reported stronger results in areas including problem-solving and comprehension. Participants also reported improved emotional wellbeing, lower stress levels and a greater sense of support following intensive meditation practice.
Study limitations
The researchers noted that the results do not prove that meditation alone caused the observed differences.
Other factors, including lifestyle habits and overall health, may also have influenced the findings. However, the study suggests that incorporating meditation into daily life could be associated with benefits for both psychological wellbeing and long-term brain function.
