UN envoy María Ángela Holguín said she met Turkey's representative in the north to receive a message from Ankara, adding that President Nikos Christodoulides had been informed of the contact.

The personal envoy of UN Secretary-General María Ángela Holguín said on Wednesday that she met Turkey's "ambassador" in the north in order to receive a message sent to her from Ankara.

Responding to questions, Holguín explained that Turkey's deputy foreign minister had informed her that a message had been conveyed through the Turkish representative.

"That is why I came to meet him, simply to receive that message, something I also explained to Mr Christodoulides," she said.

Focus on upcoming leaders' meeting

Referring to her meeting with Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman, Holguín said discussions focused on how work could continue ahead of the joint meeting of the leaders scheduled for Monday.

She said the talks examined ways of advancing preparations and maintaining momentum ahead of the planned gathering.

The meeting comes amid intensified diplomatic contacts surrounding the Cyprus issue, with efforts continuing ahead of the leaders' discussions next week.
