Maria Sakkari secured an important victory in Doha on Wednesday, booking her place in the quarterfinals of the Qatar Open with a commanding straight-sets performance. The Greek tennis player defeated Varvara Gracheva 7-6(3), 6-0, sealing her first appearance in a WTA 1000 quarterfinal since March 2024.
After a tightly contested first set that went to a tiebreak, Sakkari raised her level decisively in the second, dominating 6-0 to close out the match. Notably, in the first WTA 1000 tournament of the 2026 season, Sakkari has progressed through the draw without dropping a single set.
Her next opponent will be determined by the match between Poland’s Iga Świątek and Australia’s Daria Kasatkina.
