China’s shipbuilding industry maintained the largest share of the global market across three key indicators for the 16th consecutive year in 2025, according to data released by the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology on February 1.
The sector’s output reached 53.69 million deadweight tonnes (DWT) in 2025, marking an annual increase of 11.4%, and accounting for 56.1% of total global shipbuilding production.
New orders reached 107.82 million DWT in 2025, corresponding to 69% of China’s share of the global market.
By the end of December 2025, outstanding shipbuilding orders in the sector stood at 274.42 million DWT, up 31.5% year-on-year, with the order backlog representing 66.8% of China’s share of the global market.
