The actor says Marvel did not approach him for the upcoming Avengers film, joking that the superheroes may lose without Hawkeye.

Jeremy Renner has confirmed that he will not reprise his role as Hawkeye in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday, saying he was not invited to join the cast despite previously expressing a willingness to return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

Speaking at Liverpool Comic-Con, Renner dismissed speculation about an appearance in the film.

"No, no, no. Not in that one."

He then joked about the consequences of Hawkeye's absence.

"I'm not in Doomsday, so the Avengers will probably lose, just so you know. Marvel didn't call me, so it's their fault if they lose."

Open to returning to Marvel

Renner's comments come despite earlier statements indicating that he remained keen to return to the MCU, either for a second season of Hawkeye or another Marvel project.

In a previous interview with Empire, the actor said:

"I'm always happy when I'm in that world. I love the whole team, I love the character."

He added that he hoped to return for a second season of Hawkeye and believed there were still stories to tell.

Looking forward to ‘Endgame’ re-release

Although he will not appear in Doomsday, Renner said he is excited about the theatrical re-release of Avengers: Endgame ahead of the new film's premiere on 18 December.

The actor portrayed Clint Barton/Hawkeye in:

  • The Avengers (2012)
  • Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)
  • Avengers: Endgame (2019)

He also made appearances in other Marvel productions, including Thor and Captain America: Civil War.

Recovery after near-fatal accident

Renner has been gradually returning to work following the serious snowplough accident he suffered in 2023, when he was crushed by a vehicle weighing more than 6.5 tonnes and sustained multiple fractures.

In 2025, he said he had recovered to "more than 150%" of his previous condition and felt physically capable of returning to action-heavy roles.
