A new book, The Encyclopedia of Movie Cats, has been released, documenting more than 1,000 cats that have appeared in films and highlighting the unique role felines have played throughout cinema history.
Organised alphabetically, the encyclopedia treats movie cats as stars in their own right, cataloguing both famous feline characters and lesser-known cats that made only brief appearances on screen.
From heroes to villains
The book explores the remarkable variety of roles cats have played in films over the years.
According to its creators, cinematic cats have appeared as:
- Loyal companions
- Villains and adversaries
- Partners in crime
- Space-travelling creatures
- Inheritors of fortunes
- Animals dressed in human clothing
- Strange and otherworldly beings
A celebration of feline film history
From iconic characters such as Garfield to memorable appearances in classics including The Godfather, the encyclopedia traces how cats have become a distinctive part of movie storytelling.
The publication aims to showcase not only the most recognisable feline stars, but also the countless cats that have quietly left their mark on films across different genres and eras.
