The start of a new school year always brings a certain sweet upheaval. After the carefree days of summer, the return to routine can feel like an abrupt landing back into reality. For children, this transition carries an explosive mix of excitement and quiet anxiety about the unknown: new teachers, harder lessons, new classmates, and the worry of being accepted. For parents, the challenge is twofold and exhausting. They must balance their own demanding daily lives while, at the same time, becoming a safe haven for their children.

A meaningful connection

Every new school year, I notice the same mistake. We throw ourselves into a frantic race to buy the "perfect" school supplies, the best and most expensive bags. We also load our children's schedules with activities and extra tutoring sessions. But the success of the new year isn't measured on shop shelves, nor in overloaded timetables. It is measured in emotional preparation. The transition from holidays to the school environment is a psychological process that takes time, patience and, above all, genuine connection.

When anxiety wears a disguise

Anxiety sometimes expresses itself through behaviours that are easily mistaken for moodiness or stubbornness. Watch for the following "hidden" signs.

The return to the classroom often brings reactions to the surface that are easily misread as whining, stubbornness or bad character. In reality, children will rarely put into words the fact that they feel "under pressure" or "afraid." While these signs often point to the anxiety of adjustment, they can also be a warning sign of school bullying, learning difficulties, or even physical exhaustion.

Sudden outbursts and anger: If a child becomes reactive, shouts over trivial matters or shows unusual irritability, it is rarely a matter of character. It is the body's defence against pressure the child feels but cannot put into words.
Silence and social withdrawal: A child who suddenly shuts themselves in their room, talks less, or avoids conversations about school and friends may be experiencing intense fear about social acceptance or possible bullying.
Physical complaints with no medical cause: "My tummy hurts," "I feel like I'm going to be sick," "my head hurts." When these symptoms appear consistently in the morning or during preparation for school, the body is simply expressing anxiety physically.
Disrupted sleep and appetite: Difficulty sleeping, frequent nightmares, refusing to eat, or, conversely, a sudden need for constant snacking. Changes to basic biological functions, when there is no underlying medical cause, are among the earliest warning signs.

Don't punish the behaviour. Embrace the feeling behind it. Instead of "why are you shouting again?", try: "I can see you're upset. Is something about school starting that's worrying you?"

The pain of the first separation

For young children, school isn't a lesson; it's the first major crack in the safety of home.

Calm, not guilt: Children act as emotional mirrors. If you feel guilty or anxious about leaving them, they pick up on the sense that school is a dangerous place.
Goodbyes take courage: The morning separation should be steady, full of warmth, but brief. Long delays and dramatic farewells only prolong and magnify their distress.
Map out the day: Create a visual schedule together with drawings. Show them, through pictures, that after school always comes food, play and the safety of your embrace.

The performance trap

In primary school, expectations shift abruptly. This is where the fear of failure ("will I manage?") is born, while at the same time the great battle of detoxing from the digital world begins.

Listen for the refusal behind the words: If your child says "I'm bored" or "I don't want to go," don't respond with the classic, dry "but you have to." Ask instead: "What worries you most about tomorrow?" Give the feeling room and the right to exist.
Prepare together: Let the child organise their desk or choose their own notebooks. This gives them a valuable sense of control and autonomy over their new life.
A digital reset: Time to restore the boundaries that slipped over the summer. Gradually reinstate the rules on gadgets and establish "screen-free zones." The golden rule? Aim for as little screen time as possible, no devices for one hour after waking (so the day starts with a clear mind), and certainly no devices for one hour before bed (for deep relaxation and quality rest).

Teenagers: relationships and bullying

For a teenager, school isn't about grades. It's their social survival. Their anxiety revolves around their place in the group, the fear of rejection, insecurities about their body, and the nightmare of school or online bullying.

Be a safe harbour, not an interrogator: Teenagers shut the door when they feel they're being interrogated. Don't push for details. Build an atmosphere of complete trust, so they know that whatever happens to them, you will be there to listen, without judging or punishing them.
Respect their autonomy: Give them space and responsibility over their own schedule. They need a supporter, not a supervisor.
Protect their free time: Adolescence today moves at an exhausting pace. Don't let their lives become one-dimensional and full of obligations the moment school starts. They also need relaxation, entertainment and enjoyment in their lives.

Don't fear the change, embrace it

Don't fear change; accept and embrace it. Every new school year is a blank, clean page. It's entirely normal for the first few weeks to bring tension, complaints, tiredness or even tears — it's the body's natural reaction to adjustment.

After all, the goal isn't to be perfect parents, nor for our children to be perfect students. The goal is simply to be there. At the end of the day, what matters isn't absolute success, but the love and the bond you build with each other. On the first afternoon, sit beside them, look them in the eye and ask how they felt. Show them that whatever difficulty the new school year brings, you are a strong team. And close-knit teams always make it through together.

Remember that every child needs love, trust and patience to grow into a healthy, strong and responsible person, ready to genuinely face life's future challenges.
