Investigative journalist Makarios Drousiotis has pushed back against claims by authorities that he failed to provide evidence during a meeting with police, insisting there was “no hesitation or delay” on his part.
In a social media post following his appearance at police headquarters, Drousiotis disputed statements by Justice Minister Kostas Fitiris and the police, who had said he did not submit material to support a formal statement.
Drousiotis said the meeting took place after a request by the President of Cyprus for the information he holds to be presented to the Cabinet.
He said he arrived with a “voluminous file” and briefed investigators on the nature of the evidence in his possession, adding that he handed over “specific material for immediate use”.
According to Drousiotis, it was agreed with investigators that the most effective way to proceed would be for him to prepare a written analysis of the evidence to support a faster inquiry.
He said he is already working on that basis and will submit his statement as soon as possible, so that the Cabinet can be informed and move to appoint independent criminal investigators.
