Turkey's clamp down on social media beame official on Friday, after Turkish Justice Minister Akın Gülrek Akın announced that platforms have accepted the government’s request to require users to log in with verified identification.
Speaking from Diyarbakır, Gülrek said the measure will come into effect in roughly three months.
“We have completed discussions with the social media platforms. Our request for ID-based logins has been accepted. Implementation will start in about three months,” he stated.
The move marks a major shift in Turkey’s approach to social media, prioritising verified identities for all users. As such, anonymous accounts will no longer be able to be in use.
