Beneficaries of the General Healthcare System (GHS), better known by its Greek acronym GESY, will soon have access to a new function enabling barcode display for processing prescriptions.

According to an announcement by the Health Insurance Organisation (HIO), the barcode for prescription processing through the GHS Beneficiaries’ Portal comes into effect on March 27, 2026.

HIO explains that beneficiaries can now obtain their prescribed medicines, medical devices or other healthcare items from the pharmacy of their choice by having the pharmacist scan the barcode corresponding to the prescription directly from the Beneficiaries’ Portal.

Access is available through the GHS website. After logging in to the Beneficiaries’ Portal, users can select the ‘Available Referrals’ section and then ‘Prescriptions’, where they can locate the barcode for each prescription.

No need to disclose personal data

During their visit to the pharmacy, beneficiaries may simply show the barcode to the pharmacist, allowing the prescription to be executed without the need to mention any personal details or data.

This new feature extends the existing option of printing prescriptions that already include a barcode, and aims to further protect beneficiaries’ personal data during the dispensing process.

Alternatively, beneficiaries may still request a printed prescription from their doctor, as is currently the case.

The HIO noted that access to these features requires beneficiaries to have an active account on the Beneficiaries’ Portal and to have linked their Beneficiary Record.
