The old Larnaca Hospital has been without electricity since the weekend after thieves stole components from the building’s power supply system.

According to information provided to Politis, unknown individuals entered the premises during the weekend and removed parts from the electricity distribution panel.

The theft caused a disruption to the building’s electricity supply, forcing several employees working on site to return home.

Authorities working to restore electricity

The incident was confirmed to Politis by the spokesperson of the State Health Services Organisation (OKYpY), Charalambos Charilaou. He said the organisation is in communication with the Electricity Authority of Cyprus (EAC) in order to restore power to the facility in the coming days.

Larnaca Police are also aware of the incident and officers attended the scene after receiving a report of the theft. Investigations are currently ongoing.

Building used for health services and administrative units

The old Larnaca Hospital no longer operates as a full hospital facility. The building currently houses health services provided by personal doctors as well as administrative departments that continue to use the premises.

The property has long been earmarked to be transferred to the Municipality of Larnaca for future redevelopment.

Authorities note that this is not the first time the site has been targeted by thieves, with previous incidents mainly involving the theft of items intended for illegal resale.
