Greece has secured the historic photographs depicting the execution of 200 communists in Kaisariani in May 1944 by Nazi forces, Culture Minister Lina Mendoni announced.

In a statement, the minister said the entire Hoyer collection was examined. The collection comprises 262 photographs taken in Greece during 1943–1944, as well as printed material included by the photographer.

Authenticity confirmed

According to Mendoni, a macroscopic examination conducted by experienced officials of the Ministry of Culture and independent experts confirmed the authenticity of the material.

A preliminary agreement has already been signed between the Ministry of Culture and the collector, and the collection has been withdrawn from the online auction platform where it had been listed.

The execution of the 200 political prisoners at the Kaisariani shooting range on 1 May 1944 remains one of the most emblematic atrocities of the Nazi occupation of Greece during the Second World War.
