A total of 18 people – 14 students from Cyprus, two teachers and another two adults accompanying them – who were stranded amid political tensions in Tanzania while doing voluntary work, flew on Monday to Zanzibar, where they arrived safely.

The process of their repatriation is ongoing, Foreign Ministry Spokesperson Theodoros Gotsis told CNA.

According to Gotsis, the 18 people flew from Kilwa to Zanzibar and on Tuesday they will fly back to Cyprus via Dubai, where they are expected to arrive on Wednesday morning.

On Monday, he said, the 18 will spend the night in Zanzibar.

The repatriation of the 18 people is being carried out under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, through the High Commissioner in Nairobi, and the National Crisis Management Center, in constant cooperation with the EU Delegation to Dar es Salaam, Gotsis concluded.
