Early in 2026, the SupportCY Volunteer Corps of the Bank of Cyprus established a dedicated Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (drones) Unit, equipped with modern drones, experienced and certified operators and the capability to operate nationwide while transmitting live images across Cyprus.

With this year’s fire prevention season having started in recent days and expected to prove particularly challenging, the risk of wildfire outbreaks and spread is set to rise significantly in the weeks ahead. In response, SupportCY of the Bank of Cyprus is further strengthening its operational capacity by deploying drones for fire prevention and early detection, in cooperation with the Fire Service.

The use of drones forms part of a broader framework of operational readiness and risk management. The aim is to ensure continuous surveillance of high-risk areas, rapid identification of fire hotspots and the timely alerting of the relevant authorities. Through scheduled and coordinated patrols, the drones can detect potential fire outbreaks at an early stage, maximising preparedness.

Maximum operational readiness

At the same time, the SupportCY Volunteer Corps is completing training programmes in the coming days for both new and existing volunteers, focusing on fire prevention, response and recovery. The training is carried out in cooperation with the competent state services, particularly the Fire Service.

So far, four local and two nationwide readiness exercises have taken place, involving all units of the Volunteer Corps as well as the newly established Firefighting Helicopter Support Unit. This unit uses specialised inflatable water tanks owned by SupportCY to refuel firefighting helicopters.

SupportCY Head Marios Stavrou said the organisation has taken steps to enhance its operational capacity across Cyprus in anticipation of a difficult year ahead.

“In the face of a challenging season, SupportCY of the Bank of Cyprus has strengthened its operational capabilities across the island, always adhering to safety standards and European quality benchmarks for protective equipment and team gear,” Stavrou said.

He added that the creation of the drone unit aims to further support prevention efforts in cooperation with the Fire Service.

“Cooperation between state services, volunteers, local authorities and all relevant organisations is the key to protecting our country from fires,” he said.
