Electricity Bills: How to Cut Costs Before Turning on the Air Conditioning

Simple steps can help households reduce summer electricity bills.

As temperatures rise, households are looking for ways to keep electricity costs under control before air conditioners start running for long hours.

Setting the air conditioner correctly is one of the most effective ways to reduce consumption. A temperature of around 26°C is recommended, as every degree lower can increase electricity use by up to 7%. Regular maintenance and clean filters can also help units run more efficiently.

Many appliances continue to use electricity even when left on standby. Televisions, chargers and computers should be switched off completely where possible, as this can help reduce unnecessary consumption.

Households with off-peak tariffs can also benefit by using washing machines and other energy-intensive appliances during lower-cost hours, or by programming them to run overnight.

Shading and ventilation can further reduce the need for air conditioning. Curtains and shutters should be kept closed during the hottest hours, while homes should be aired early in the morning or late in the evening.

Small daily changes can also make a difference. Avoid using the oven during the hottest parts of the day, use fans where possible and set the fridge correctly, ideally between 4°C and 5°C.

Reducing electricity use does not always require major investment. In many cases, careful everyday choices can help lower summer bills.
